2021 Christmas List

January 4, 2022

COVID.

That pretty much summarizes the last two years.

I’m still living on Regency Place (since 1976!) and enjoying my sunroom (which is where the Christmas tree is), and Lindsay is still living at Rose Hill. She is still Office Administrator at Senior Services of Alexandria, a non-profit in Old Town (12 years in Sept.), and she is indispensable in working with me for 3 of my 4 choirs at Bethany. I’ve just finished my TWELFTH year of ‘retirement’…hard to believe. Hemphill Editing (www.hemphillediting.com, linda@hemphillediting.com) is doing pretty well, with many repeat and referral clients, and I’m still working at Bethany Lutheran (nearly 24 years). Lindsay is back with the Columbia Flute Choir after a year off. We are going to only ONE Caps game this year, on my birthday. I still accompany the Arlington Children’s Chorus and teach music to the Kindergarten class at Bethany. Everything else is still shut down.

Here are the highlights, in chronological order (I’m not listing all the rehearsals, services, concerts!): In January, we did ‘movie days’ on January 1 & 2 and went out to lunch for my birthday. I got my first COVID shot. In March, I got my second COVID shot, and we observed the first anniversary of when the world essentially closed on 3/13. Lindsay was hospitalized again for kidney issues, and it was determined that she will have to undergo dialysis. In April, I begin the process of re-financing and Lindsay got her first Covid shot. In May, Lindsay had her second Covid vaccine shot and her first pre-dialysis surgery to implant a fistula in her arm.  In June, we had another ‘movie day’, plus I had some annual tests. In July, we went to Wolf Trap to see a concert version of “Sweeney Todd”…we both cried when we heard the live orchestra warming up! I did the annual church planning. We also drove to/from Radford for lunch and to see the new “Hemphill Hall”! FINALLY closed on my re-financing!

In August, I did the music for Vacation Bible School, and we watched the Olympics. For Lindsay’s birthday, we saw the Aretha Franklin tribute “Respect” plus “Free Guy” and went to lunch at the Macaroni Grill! We also went to Ocean City for snacks! Later we were at Wolf Trap again for a showing of the original “Star Wars” but with the National Symphony playing the music ‘live’…fabulous! In September, I was diagnosed with Stage 2 uterine cancer and had a radical hysterectomy. Lindsay covered my church job for 3 weeks, although my recovery was VERY easy. (I stayed at Woodbine Rehab for a few days….we had planned that because we didn’t know the recovery would be easy!) In October, I learned from my surgeon that some of the cancer cells had likely escaped, and I would need chemo and radiation. In celebration of that news, we went to see “No Time To Die” at the movies. Later, I got a Medi-Port installed in my chest for the chemo treatments. We also had a special visit from the Bradke family!

In November, I got my COVID booster shot and one horriblehorriblehorrible chemo treatment….I lost 18 pounds in 12 days and was in constant pain. I told the surgeon I was NOT having any more chemo, and he agreed but said I had to have radiation, and I agreed. My hair began falling out, so I had my head shaved and started wearing hats. On Thanksgiving weekend, Lindsay, along with Sue and Mico DeAngel, surprised me with a Christmas tree (I had decided I was too drained to have one)! That same weekend, the Lester family visited, and Jay did all my handyman chores! AND we went to see “Sing 2”! In December, I got ‘mapped’ for radiation, and the first of 25 treatments began Dec. 27. Lindsay set up a Sign-Up Genius for folks to drive me….parking at the hospital takes 3 times as long as the procedure….and all 25 slots were soon filled! Lindsay had her second pre-dialysis surgery on the 9th…..they made her go to a hospital in Maryland, and she had to be there at 6 a.m.! Fortunately, Carrie from church offered to drive her there, and Betty Siegel (Roger Oliver’s wife….from Singers) drove her home the next day. On the 19th, we saw “West Side Story”, which was wonderful. New Year’s Eve we had a lovely lunch at the City Kitchen in West End Village. On New Year’s Day, we stayed safely at home. Cousin Willi called me from Belgium, and I started this letter!

One positive thing we learned during this impossible year:  PEOPLE ARE AMAZING. There was no shortage of folks offering to help and do things for us and going out of their way to do them! Also, Lindsay’s Facebook posts brought messages from people we hadn’t heard from in years….decades, even…..which was wonderful.

We love getting your cards, letters, and photos! (Also, please send me your e-mail address!...to linda.hemphillediting@gmail.com.)

Here’s to a better 2022!

Caps' Playoffs thoughts

Please forgive me, as I just have a few thoughts I need to share.....and my thoughts may be a bit disjointed. I'm not editing (sorry Mom).

So, I’ve been going to Caps games since I was 5 (1984-85 season). I’ve absolutely grown up going to games. Mom would also use games as a teaching experience. She would use Caps’ players numbers to teach me my multiplication table. Example: I’d have to know that Cote times Hatcher would equal Bondra. When I was younger, she would send me to get concessions (during the game, because the concourse was sometimes unsafe during intermissions) to teach me to make change. However, I would often come back with both the food AND the money! She would ask me, “What happened?!” I would respond with, “They said I was cute!”  I also learned what to do if a fight broke out (put your back to the wall and just start walking…..mostly used when the Flyers came to town).
All of this to say: I’ve seen a ton of Caps history! I know we were there for “The Game”….though I slept through part of it and we had to leave early (Mom had Easter services the next morning). More recently, we were at the Winter Classic at Nats Park, the Stadium Series at Navy Field, and …..the 1998 Playoff run.

During the 1997-98 season, I was in Radford for my freshman year of college, so I wasn’t really involved during the regular season. I couldn’t be! The internet barely existed and they weren’t going to show all the Caps games in Radford. So, when I came home, I went to the playoff games with my Mom. It was the first season in the new arena (then, MCI Center), we were up in the 400s, and I wanted them to do well. But since I hadn’t experienced the entire year, I wasn’t invested.

This year is different!

As I said earlier, I’ve always been a Caps fan. However, about 10 or 12 years ago, I really got into them even more. Part of it was because I had been done with college for a few years and I was a little more settled in life. Also, the internet was better and I could do more research and watch more games. Also, I found the wonderful site RMNB (russianmachineneverbreaks.com).  All of a sudden, it wasn’t just a random group of guys….they had families, they had personalities! They were real people. The addition of those little details made all the difference and I fell in love with this team all over again.

Most years (in the Ovie era), during the playoffs, I’m always cautiously optimistic. I am a naturally “glass is half full” kind of girl. So, I was always nervous, but I believed in my guys. I’d have that gnawing feeling in my stomach, but I hoped they’d do well. But that gnawing feeling was deep in my stomach. This year is different! 20 years ago, I was sitting next to Mom as we passed each round. She would be jumping up and down and crying. Meanwhile, I’d be laughing at her because I wasn’t invested. Now, it’s me crying all over the place because of this beautiful team.  But I haven't had that feeling in the pit of my gut....at all! (I' will be re-evaluating my gut when the Stanley Cup Finals start next week!)

All this to say: I have always been a Caps fan, I will always be a Caps fan. And no matter what happens, I will always love this team and support them!

LET’S GO CAPS! #ALLCAPS #ItsOKtoBelieve

2016 Christmas Letter

Hey everybody, I know I never post in here and I know it's been 4 years since my last post, but I'll try and be better about that this year (no promises, though)! :) Anyway, below is my Mom's famed Christmas letter, which sums up our 2016. Enjoy!
-L-

January 10, 2017

OK, so I didn’t make the Epiphany deadline, but the SEASON of Epiphany lasts until March 1, so….  I’m still living on Regency Place (40 years!) and enjoying my sunroom (which is where the Christmas tree is), and Lindsay is still living at Rose Hill. She’s still working as Administrative Assistant (7th anniversary in Sept.) at Senior Services of Alexandria, a non-profit in Old Town, and she is indispensable in working with me for my children’s choirs at Bethany (I pay her in hockey tickets!). I have now been ‘retired’ for SEVEN years…hard to believe. Hemphill Editing (www.hemphillediting.com, linda @ hemphillediting. com) is doing well, with many repeat clients, I get some work from ScienceDocs.com and Enago. I’m still working at Bethany Lutheran (nearly 19 years) and am in my eighth full ‘season’ as Accompanist for The Alexandria Singers. Lindsay has returned to the Columbia Flute Choir (playing the sub-contra bass flute….2 ½ octaves lower than the “normal” flute), which played at the White House again in December, and we go to Caps games faithfully! And I’m still taking lots of drugs for various ailments…better living through chemistry.
Sadly, in  2016, we lost too many friends: Reilly Lewis, one of the great musicians of our time; Fran Vaughn, a charter member of Virginia Bronze (community bell choir); Kathy Langley (long-time member of my choir at Bethany); Jerry Lucas (long-time member of Bethany…his wife, Lois, rang and sang in my choirs); Erika Grant Poindexter (college friend of Lindsay’s…yes, too young);  Virginia Flanagan (long-time member of Mt. Vernon Presbyterian); Diana Beveridge Cade (we sang together in the great Epiphany choir with Garnell all those years ago);  Richard Cauthers, Sr. (a long-time member of Bethany); and Steven Herren  (age 24…REALLY too young…his mother Sheri worked with me at IADR for many years…that was the only good thing, seeing my former co-workers again for the first time since I retired). We also celebrated the life of Wayne Miller, who died in late 2015. He and his wife Debbie had been our friends since I came to DC to go to college in 1962.  I played for their wedding, and Lindsay and I played for his memorial.
On a happier note, there was also good stuff in 2016. Even though I had to pay sopranos to sing in the choir (two per Sunday, $50 each….and that money is now in the church budget!...AND it has shamed some folks in the congregation to step up!), the usual church events went well…highlighted by Easter and Christmas, the VIC Choir Festival, and the children’s musical (“Jesse’s Boy”…another version of David and Goliath). I continued doing accompanying/teaching with Roger Oliver at Yorktown High School in Arlington. Roger retired at the end of the school year, but his successor contacted me, and I’m still playing there and at Williamsburg Middle School, and I still love it (this is my 7th year)!
Here are the highlights, in chronological order: hockey and blizzard in January, Lindsay took another class, video editing, at AIM (Arlington Independent Media); hockey and The Alexandria Singers Winter Cabaret in February; hockey and  the Singers’ “Sing for Your Life” workshop in March, a concert at the Kennedy Center in honor of Gar Whaley (band director at Bishop Ireton when Lindsay was there) (also March), and the Hemphill & Hemphill Flute & Piano Duo performed for the annual Gala held by Senior Services of Alexandria at the Mark Center Hilton (also in March), plus Holy Week and Easter;  was an organ sub at Prince of Peace in Springfield once a month (when the praise team had the service at Bethany), about six months; hockey, Lindsay’s big concert, “Musical Whiplash!” (it’s on YouTube! https://youtu.be/IsNH-H1O5Js or look it up!...and Musical Whiplash 2.0 is coming in 2018!), the Singers performed an April Fools’ comcert at the Durant Center, we saw Chanticleer at the Seminary, and replaced the water line to the house in April; hockey and a baby shower in May, plus my Allelu Singers’ annual Road Trip with the musical; a concert by Harry Connick, Jr. at Wolf Trap in June, plus I played for Yorktown’s graduation at Constitution Hall), we went to see Star Wars at the Verizon Center, plus Singers’ shows (at George Washington Masonic Memorial and Fort Ward Park).
In July, we went to Caps’ Development Camp, I did the music for Vacation Bible School at Bethany (sang 250 songs in a week), did my annual 12 months’ worth of planning for the 2016-2017 “season” at church,  and saw the latest “Star Trek”; in August we watched a lot of the Olympics, saw a friend perform in “Oliver”, saw “West Side Story” at Little Theatre of Alexandria, saw Meryl Streep in “Florence Foster Jenkins’ (an excellent movie!), and spent a few days with Lindsay in Ocean City in the new apartment from last year (she did the whole week, which included her birthday, and some friends visited, plus she stopped in Philly on the way  home to visit her friend Natala); in September, everything started up again and we each saw a World Cup preview game at the Verizon Center; in October, it was my favorite month because the Caps and the Nationals were  both playing!, also, we went to my 50th Class Reunion at American University (I even got a medal!), so I am now a Golden Eagle (it was a great weekend…lunch on Friday and a terrific a cappella concert on Sunday); on one Saturday in November, we went to Radford for lunch, and it turned out to be Founders’ Day for Lindsay’s professional fraternity, Mu Phi Epsilon, so we went to the concert, which was really good (3.5 hours down, 3.5 hours there, and 3.5 hours back! Fun!). Then came December (6 Singers’ performances, 9 church services, 21 rehearsals, Columbia Flute Choir at the White House, flute/piano duo playing for City Lunch for the Aging, saw a friend in “A Christmas Carol” at Little Theatre of Alexandria, and 4 Caps games)!

We have loved getting your cards, letters, and photos, and I owe some of you at least a call! (Also, please send me your e-mail address!...to linda.hemphillediting@gmail.com.)

2013 Christmas Letter

December 28, 2013

Greetings!  Had a ‘window of opportunity’ today, and I’m taking it!  I’m still living on Regency Place and GREATLY enjoying my sunroom (that’s where the Christmas tree is!), and Lindsay is still living at Rose Hill. She’s still working as Administrative Assistant at Senior Services of Alexandria, a non-profit in Old Town. I have now been retired for FOUR years…hard to believe. Hemphill Editing (www.hemphillediting.com, linda@hemphillediting.com) is doing quite well, with many repeat clients, but most of my work comes from SAGE Publications, ScienceDocs.com, and Enago (www.enago.com, part of Crimson Limited), as well as doing random editing from the IADR and other sources. I’m still working at Bethany Lutheran (nearly 16 years), and am in my fifth full ‘season’ as Accompanist for The Alexandria Singers. Lindsay’s still in the Columbia Flute Choir, and we went to Caps games the minute the lockout was over!  And I’m still taking lots of drugs for various ailments…better living through chemistry.

All of the usual church events went well…highlighted by Easter and Christmas, VIC Choir Festival, Choral Evensong, the Tenth Annual Sounds Sweet handbell dessert concert, and the children’s musical (“Daniel, Chapter Six”…look it up!). My Trinity Handbells split a concert with The Metropolitan Chorus in Arlington in December and we were very well-received! I continued doing some accompanying/teaching with Roger Oliver at Yorktown High School in Arlington, and I still love it! It’s just a couple of mornings a week, and not every week, but it is great fun. Lindsay still has her ‘modest flute studio’ ….and she still likes it!

December featured 14 rehearsals, 14 church services, 4 major concerts, 4 minor concerts, Lindsay performing at the White House (with the Columbia Flute Choir), both of us on stage at the Kennedy Center for the annual “Messiah” Sing-along, which featured Lindsay’s Radford friend Paige Kenley as the mezzo soloist, and a couple of holiday parties!

Other miscellaneous events included The Alexandria Singers Winter and Fall Cabarets, June concerts, and other random area performances. Also, Hemphill & Hemphill Flute & Piano Duo performed for the annual Gala held by Senior Services of Alexandria at the Mark Center Hilton.

The year began with Lindsay flying to San Francisco courtesy of her friend Natala. She had a wonderful time!  Also in January I was recognized by the Washington Capitals as a 25-year Season Ticket-holder! I couldn’t go to the game where the ‘ceremony’ took place (had to play for a funeral), but Lindsay and her friend Marc (from Pennsylvania) went, watched the game from a suite (!),and  went onto the ice to accept a framed jersey with “Hemphill 25” on it . It currently hangs in the sunroom, right next to the Christmas tree!

In February, we went to Richmond to hear Pentatonix (winners of last year’s “The Sing-Off” on NBC). They are awesome in person! In March, my cousin Willi visited from Belgium (my mom’s brother’s son), and we had a great time. In April, Lindsay gave a recital, “Hymns of the Faith 2”, at her father’s church in Arlington. Joining her was her elementary and junior high band director, Barbara Shearer, who is a wonderful oboist. We really enjoyed working on this program. Barbara said this is the first time she has ever collaborated with a former student! In April, we saw a ‘different’ staging of “The Wizard of Oz” at Yorktown High School….quite of few of ‘my’ kids from Madrigals were in the cast, and it was an excellent production. In May we added the National Lutheran Home in Rockville, MD, as a destination for a performance by two of Bethany’s bell choirs, the King’s Ringers (children ages 6-11) and Trinity Handbells (youth and adults). They asked us back for this year!  Also in May, Lindsay and I participated in the PBS “StoryCorps” program, where Lindsay basically interviewed me about my life, and we got a few of my ‘stories’ on tape for posterity!  Oh, also in May I had my bathtub taken out and a lovely walk-in shower installed….my mobility isn’t going to get any better, after all! In June, we saw the New Kids on the Block at the Verizon Center….people laugh at me, but I love their music! They do a GREAT show! They were touring with 98 Degrees (Nick Lachey’s group) and Boyz II Men (with Shawn Stockman). We also caught up with my college friend (and Lindsay’s godmother) Barbara Kurtzig, who was just back from visiting her son Josh and his family in China. We didn’t do a music camp at church in the summer, and our Michigan choral festival took a year off, so summer was a little less cluttered than usual! However, I did my annual 12 months’ worth of planning for the 2013-2014 “season” at church.

In July, Lindsay acquired a new boyfriend (online), Nate Young. He works for the DEA and lives about halfway between Lindsay’s apt. and my house. He has been introduced to a whole new work of music, rehearsals, concerts, shows, and hockey games!

In August, we saw “Avenue Q” at the Little Theatre of Alexandria. It’s a good show, but it’s best to be prepared before you go!  We went to the American Idol show at the Patriot Center the day before I left for my annual two weeks at the Jersey shore. The Hemphill Editing laptop was put to good use, since I was able to work at the shore….it doesn’t seem as much like work there, somehow!  Lindsay was able to spend one week, and she brought Nate up for a weekend.  Also in August, Lindsay and I went to the Gala Closing Concert at the Performing Arts Institute (formerly Encore Music Camp) in Kingston, Pennsylvania. It was the first I’d been back for about 10 years, and it was wonderful….very nostalgic.  While we were at the shore, we saw an excellent production of “Peter Pan” (with flying!) featuring a friend of Lindsay’s from New York.   On August 29, Lindsay and I and some of my ringers were part of a group of about 550 handbell ringers who performed the National Anthem for the Washington Nationals ballgame at Nationals Park.  Look it up on YouTube! It was fantastic! (Just search on handbells national anthem Washington Nationals!)

In September we saw “Miss Saigon” at Signature Theatre in Arlington….a superb performance, and still powerful even after all these years. We also saw “Potted Potter” at Sidney Harman Hall….a hysterical production by two guys doing all 7 Harry Potter books in one show! Lindsay and Marc also went to Caps Convention to kick off the season. In October we saw the “So You Think You Can Dance” tour show in Virginia Beach….and drove home afterward (4 hours each way! Aargh!)! But it was worth it! In November we saw James Galway with the Irish Chamber Orchestra at the George Mason Performing Arts Center. He is a truly gifted flutist. Lindsay never knows whether to start practicing again or give up her instrument altogether every time she hears him!

I was quietly at home for New Year’s…I’m very dull! …watching the NHL Winter Classic on TV (it’ll be HERE next year!) and marking bell parts!

Love (and send me your e-mail address!),

Linda & Lindsay
